The recent national election of a president who has no moral
conscience -- by an electorate which is more interested in being
"taken care of" than in trustworthiness, personal integrity,
righteousness, or love -- is one more indication that we are not
as a people interested in God being our Sovereign.  God has taken
His hand off America.  We have chosen to go it alone, and He
has said -- "OK".  God will let us continue on our own until it hurts
so badly that we can do no other than return to Him.

We were afflicted with a terrible war once because of our arrogance
and self-centeredness (both North and South).  We bring that
same scourge closer every day that we continue to tell God that
His services are no longer needed.

"We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven.  We have been preserved, the many years, in peace and prosperity.  We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown.  But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.   Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.   It behooves us, then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness."

President Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation
for a National Day of Fasting, Humility and Prayer, April 30, 1863
