History is an essentially Biblical thing. The pagan world has never taken history seriously, and the secular world tries, because it has been founded on the good things wrought by the Biblical view, but it cannot make sense of history. Marx failed, Hegel failed, and on it goes.
St. Augustine wrote The City of God, the first philosophy of history ever written, to show the difference between the pagan and the Biblical views of history. Only the Biblical worldview can meaningfully talk of a cosmos which is headed somewhere, an objective meaning to life into which we are called -- the Kingdom of Heaven. The only true civilization. 'Civis', from which we get 'civilization' is the Latin word for 'city'. The City of God is indeed the true civilization. You want to be civilized? Follow Jesus.
