On What is America Based?
What is Worth Dying For?

F. Earle Fox

[COMMENT:   This is lifted from an email conversation.   I had sent out an email with some ideas expressed, and got a reply that they were not true, but no rebuttal, only a request to not get any more of such.   Below was my response.    E. Fox]

Dear xxx,     It is not clear what you thought was "not true" about my remarks.  Maybe you are right about it, whatever it is.  But the only way to find out is to test your opinion in the public arena.  What other way is there?  We need each other, sometimes especially our opponents, to keep  honest.  That is what public arenas are for.  That is what our Constitution was written to provide in legal and political matters.
Surely you do not want to fall into the trap of thinking that you are so perfectly right that you do not need the discipline of having to defend you views in an honest contest of ideas.  If you were wrong, would you not want to know?
That is what science is about, and honest academics of any sort, and it is also what honest religion is about -- a freemarket of ideas which have to prove their worth in the public arena.  That requires a people who are dedicated to the truth of any matter, not just winning their position and having their way.

That is what America is based on.  Those principles are worth dying for
