Christianity & the 12 Steps of AA

[COMMENT: These steps came out of the Christian spiritual life and should be reimported.  The Church is "Sinners Anonymous".   Only not so anonymous.  Sin is rarely taken seriously in the churches today.

Either we recover our sense of systematic repentance, or, as Terry Fullam said, we will continue to be -- not much help to the Kingdom of God and not much threat to the kingdom of Satan.    E. Fox]

Scripture and the Twelve Steps
Step One

Romans 7:18 - I know nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

We admit we are powerless over the effect of our separation from God that our lives have become unmanageable.

Step Two

Philippians 2:13 - For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.

We believe in a Sovereign God who will restore us to sanity apart from attempts of our own.

Step Three

Romans 12:1 - Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - which is your spiritual act of worship.

We make daily decisions to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God.

Step Four

Lamentations 3:40 - Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.

We Continually make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Step Five

James 5:16 - Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

We admit to God, to ourselves, and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

Step Six

James 4:10 - Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.

We have a fervent desire to have God remove all of these defects of character.

Step Seven

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

We humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings.

Step Eight

Luke 6:31 - Do to others as you would have them do to you.

We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

Step Nine

Matthew 5:23-24 - Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Step Ten

I Corinthians 10:12 - So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall.

We continue to take personal inventory, and when we are wrong, promptly admitted it.

Step Eleven

Colossians 3:16a - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

We seek through prayer and meditation, to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Step Twelve

Galatians 6:1 - brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual restore him gently.  But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.

By experiencing God's grace, mercy, and empowerment found in these steps, we will carry this message of hope to others, and continue to practice these principles in all affairs.
